Should Leap Day Be a Holiday?

Down what road could leap day lead you?

Down what road could leap day lead you?

It’s Leap Day! That weird day that happens once every 4 years. That alone qualifies it as a holiday in my book. What about you?

Because it’s leap day and the 5th Monday of the month, I thought I’d have a little fun.

What’s the deal with February anyway? I mean, all the other months have 30 or 31 days. Why did the calendar makers only give 28 to February? Why not steal a day from two of those months with 31 days and give them to February? Then if it still needed an extra day every 4 years, it could have 31 instead of 29.

Leap Day holds some interesting ideas for stories. For me, it brings to mind the movies Brigadoonand Leap Year.

Imagine a story based on Feb. 29 …

  • with a character who only ages according to when his/her birthday actually happens
  • that you could go back in time and change one decision
  • where a portal to another dimension (or to some place far out in the universe) opened up

What story ideas based on today can you come up with? And as for making it a holiday? What’s your opinion? Leave your comments below.

So you won’t be disappointed, here’s a magazine that accepts short stories (for all your Feb. 29 ideas): http://www.thefictiondesk.com/submissions/
