A Peek at Embracing Her Inheritance

8 April, 2024 by Debra

I thought I’d give you a taste of what I’m currently working on. I’m up to 32452 words. Still aiming to release this in late fall. Here’s the prologue from Embracing Her Inheritance. Enjoy, and let me know your thoughts.

“Chief Schmidt, good morning. I’m Elizabeth Travers from the Chronicle.” Elizabeth shook the chief’s hand and observed the fire station bay and the personnel wiping down the trucks. “Thank you for agreeing to see me.”

“How can I help you, Miss Travers? Let’s go to my office. Would you like some coffee?”

“No thank you, I’m fine.” Would she ever get off the city beat and on to more exciting news? She followed Chief Schmidt as he made his way to his office. He motioned her to a chair then took a seat behind his desk.

“We’d like to do a story on the recent blizzard and how it impacted the area. How did you and your men cope with conditions? Were there more calls than normal?”

“Actually, thank the good Lord, we had very few calls. But we did have quite an extraordinary one down near Ardmore.”

“Ardmore? That place is nothing but a ghost town, and it’s what, twenty or thirty miles from here. Weren’t there services any closer?”

“No, there weren’t.”

Elizabeth scrounged through her purse and pulled out a recorder. “May I record this?”

“Certainly.” The chief leaned forward in his chair and placed his elbows on the desk. “It’s worth recording.”

Elizabeth smiled. The assignment to interview the fire chief sounded as thrilling as the latest agricultural workshop on insect and weed management, but maybe she’d get a front page story out of it instead of three lines on the last page. She turned on the recorder and set it on the desk. “I expect the snow made it daunting, but please elaborate.”

“The call came in around 3:00 a.m. Monday. Five people were stranded at a church near Ardmore and one had a head injury. It took us some four hours or more to get there. Our ATVs strained to navigate the terrain. At times, six-foot drifts blocked our way. We had to get out and scoop a path.”

“You must have been worn out and half frozen by the time you arrived. How did you cope with that?”

“We dress accordingly. All part of the job, especially this time of year. But I’ll never forget what we found once we got there.” The chief sighed and looked up at the ceiling. He took another deep breath and shook his head.

“Chief? You’ve got my complete attention. What did you find?”

He stared at her for several agonizing moments as if searching her soul. Would he answer her question?

“A miracle, Miss Travers….We found a miracle.”
